What is a GST ARN?
When a GST registration application is submitted on the GST portal, an Application Reference Number (ARN) is generated automatically. The ARN is a 15-character alphanumeric code that serves as the unique identifier for tracking the application through the registration process.
The ARN is issued regardless of whether the application is pending, under query, approved, or rejected.
GST Registration Application Statuses
A GST registration application can show the following statuses after ARN generation:
Pending for processing: the application has been submitted and is awaiting action by the GST officer
Pending for clarification: the officer has raised a query and the applicant must respond within the stipulated time
Clarification filed, pending for order: the applicant has responded to the query and the application is awaiting a final decision
Approved: the GSTIN has been issued and the registration is active
Rejected: the application has been rejected by the officer; a fresh application may be filed
How long does GST registration take?
Under Rule 9 of the CGST Rules, 2017, a GST registration application is processed within:
7 working days: if no query is raised by the officer
30 working days: if a query is raised, from the date of the applicant's response
If no action is taken within these timelines, the registration is deemed approved under the GST law.
What is a GSTIN?
A Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN) is the 15-digit unique number assigned to a taxpayer upon successful GST registration. It is structured as follows:
First 2 digits: State code
Next 10 digits: PAN of the taxpayer
13th digit: Entity number for the same PAN in the same state
14th digit: Default Z
15th digit: Check code
A GSTIN is required for issuing tax invoices, filing GST returns, and claiming input tax credit.
What is the difference between ARN status and GSTIN status?
ARN status and GSTIN status are two different things:
ARN status tracks the progress of a registration application, it is relevant before the GSTIN is issued
GSTIN status refers to whether an existing registered taxpayer's registration is active, suspended, or cancelled. It is checked separately on the GST portal using the GSTIN number.
