Which tax payments can you check status for?

  • Advance Tax: Paid in four instalments during the financial year on or before 15 June, 15 September, 15 December, and 15 March.

  • Self-Assessment Tax: The balance tax payable before filing your ITR, after accounting for TDS and advance tax already paid, under Section 266 of the Income Tax Act, 2025.

  • Regular Assessment Tax: Tax payable following an assessment order issued by the Assessing Officer.

  • Demand Payment: Tax payable against an outstanding demand raised on the portal.

  • TDS on personal transactions: Tax deducted at source on transactions such as property purchase or rent, paid directly by the buyer or tenant, crypto trades and more.

What do the tax payment statuses mean?

  • Payment Not Initiated: A valid CRN has been generated but no payment has been started. The challan is active and you can still make payment within its 15-day validity window.

  • Initiated: You have started the payment through net banking, debit card, or payment gateway, but the bank has not yet confirmed receipt. Once initiated, the same CRN cannot be used to restart the transaction.

  • Awaiting Bank Confirmation: Payment has been submitted but the bank's internal checker has not yet approved it. No action required; status will update once the bank confirms.

  • Paid: The tax has been received and credited to the government's direct tax account. It will reflect in your Form 26AS and AIS within a few working days.

  • Failed: The transaction was not successful. If your account was debited, contact your bank directly. You cannot retry with the same CRN, create a new challan using the copy option on the e-Pay Tax page.

  • Incorrect Details from Bank: The bank returned a mismatch in payment details. Contact your bank if the amount was debited. Generate a fresh CRN to retry.

  • Expired: The CRN was not used within its validity period. Generate a new challan to make the payment.

What is a CRN?

A CRN, or Challan Reference Number, is the 14-digit number generated when you create a tax challan on the Income Tax portal. It is like a receipt for your challan, before the payment is made.

Every direct tax payment starts with a CRN. It links the payment to your PAN, the assessment year, and the correct tax head, so the Income Tax Department can record it accurately.

Once payment is made, the bank issues a separate 18-digit Challan Identification Number (CIN), which appears in your challan receipt and reflects in your Annual Information Statement (AIS). The CRN is what you use to check payment status; the CIN is confirmation that the payment has been received.

How long is a CRN valid?

A CRN is valid for 15 days from the date of generation. If payment is not completed within this window, the status changes to Expired and a fresh CRN must be created.

For advance tax challans generated on or after 16 March, the validity is automatically set to 31 March of that financial year, whichever is earlier.

If payment is by cheque and the cheque is presented on or before the Valid Till date, the challan validity is extended by an additional 90 days.

How long does it take for tax payment to reflect in AIS?

A confirmed tax payment reflects in your Annual Information Statement (AIS) within 3–5 working days of bank confirmation. For payments made via RTGS or NEFT, the timeline starts after the Reserve Bank of India receives the remittance from your bank.
