What does PAN Verification check for?
Verification confirms two things: whether your PAN is active in the Income Tax Department's database, and whether the name and date of birth you entered match the records against that PAN.
What do you need to verify your PAN?
Three inputs:
PAN: your 10-character alphanumeric number (e.g., ABCDE1234F)
Full name: exactly as it appears on your PAN card
Date of birth: as registered with the Income Tax Department
Mobile number: any valid number to receive the OTP; it does not need to be your registered number
An OTP is sent to verify the request. It is valid for 15 minutes, with a maximum of three attempts.
What do the verification results mean?
The portal returns one of three outcomes.
PAN is Active and details are as per PAN: Your PAN is valid and the name and date of birth you entered match the ITD records exactly. No action needed.
PAN is Active but details are not as per PAN: The PAN exists and is active, but the name or date of birth you entered doesn't match what the ITD has on record. Check for spelling — the name must be entered exactly as it appears on the PAN card, including initials, spacing, and any abbreviated parts. If you're confident the spelling is correct, your ITD records may contain an error. You can file a PAN correction request through Protean (formerly NSDL) or UTIITSL to update the records.
PAN is not Active/Deleted/Fake.
This covers three distinct situations:
Not Active: the PAN has been marked inoperative, most commonly because it was not linked with Aadhaar by the deadline. Per the CBDT circular, unlinked PANs became inoperative from 1 July 2023. Reactivate by paying the ₹1,000 late fee and completing PAN-Aadhaar linking on the e-Filing portal. You can check your PAN-Aadhar link status here.
Deleted: the PAN has been cancelled by the Income Tax Department, typically due to a duplicate (holding more than one PAN is prohibited under Section 139A of the Income Tax Act, 1961) or fraud. Contact your jurisdictional Assessing Officer (AO) to resolve.
Fake: the number does not exist in the ITD database. Do not use this PAN for any financial transaction.
Why PAN status matters?
An inoperative PAN blocks or complicates several things:
Tax filing: You cannot file an ITR or receive a refund
TDS: Deductors are required to deduct TDS at the higher rate of 20% (instead of the standard rate) on payments made to persons with inoperative PANs, per Section 206AA
Banking and investments: Opening accounts, purchasing mutual funds, and other financial transactions where PAN is mandatory for KYC
Property and high-value transactions: PAN is required for property purchases above ₹10 lakh and cash transactions above specified thresholds
Keeping your PAN active and your details current prevents delays and higher TDS deductions.
