What is an acknowledgement number?

An acknowledgement number is the 15-digit unique reference assigned to your ITR when it is submitted on the Income Tax e-filing portal. It is printed on your ITR-V (the verification form).

Every return, whether filed through the portal, offline utility, or an ERI, gets a separate acknowledgement number. If you have filed a revised return, use the acknowledgement number of that return to check the updated status.

What do the ITR statuses mean?

Each status reflects where your return is in the processing cycle. Here is what each one means and what actions, if any, need to be taken.

  • Submitted and pending for e-Verification: Your return has been filed but not yet verified. Verify within 30 days of filing using Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or by sending a signed ITR-V to CPC Bengaluru. An unverified return is treated as invalid.

  • Successfully e-Verified: Your return has been submitted and verified. The Income Tax Department is yet to process it. No action required at this stage.

  • Return processed with no Demand no Refund: Your return has been processed. The department's computation matches your filing and there is no tax demand and no refund due. No action required.

  • Return processed with Refund: Your return has been processed and a refund is due. Check your refund status separately to track the credit to your bank account.

  • Return processed with Demand: Your return has been processed and a tax demand has been raised. Log in to the portal, review the demand notice, and either pay the demand or file a response if you disagree.

  • Defective: The department has found a defect in your filed return, typically missing information or inconsistencies. You will receive a notice asking you to rectify the defect within 15 days, and file it again. If you don't respond, the return is treated as invalid.

  • Case transferred to Assessing Officer: The Centralised Processing Centre has transferred your return to your jurisdictional Assessing Officer. The officer will contact you for any additional details required.

How long does ITR processing take?

Processing time varies by return type and assessment year.

For most salaried returns (ITR-1 and ITR-4), the CPC typically processes the return within 20–45 days of e-verification. For more complex returns or those with large refund claims, it may take longer.

If your status has been "Successfully e-Verified" for more than 60 days without moving to a processed state, you can raise a grievance on the Income Tax portal under the Grievances section. You can also contact the CPC helpline at 1800 103 0025.

What happens after your return is processed?

When a return is processed, the Income Tax Department sends an intimation under Section 270(1) of the Income Tax Act, 2025, to your registered email address. This intimation shows the department's computation alongside your filed figures and states the outcome: refund, demand, or no adjustment.

Read the intimation carefully. Even when the outcome matches what you filed, it is worth confirming the figures. If the intimation raises a demand or adjusts your refund downward and you disagree, you can file a rectification request under Section 287 on the Income Tax portal.

If your refund is due, the department credits it directly to your pre-validated bank account. The processing of the refund begins only after your return is e-verified, and typically takes 4–5 weeks from that date to reach your account.
