What is MCA Company Master Data?

Company Master Data is the official record the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) maintains for every registered company and LLP in India — part of the same central MCA master database used by auditors, banks, and compliance teams. It includes registration status, classification, incorporation details, and capital structure for a given entity.

Why do you need to check a company's master data?

Company master data is the standard first check before entering a business relationship with a registered entity. A few common situations where it comes up:

  • Before onboarding a vendor or supplier: confirm the company is Active and the registered address matches what they've shared

  • Before accepting a client engagement: freelancers and consultants routinely verify a client's registration status before proceeding

  • Before investing: a quick check on incorporation date, authorized capital, and status gives a baseline before any deeper due diligence

  • Checking an invoice: if you receive a GST-compliant invoice, the master data confirms the issuing company's registered details

  • Job verification: confirms a recruiter's company is legitimately registered and Active, not a shell entity

What does an MCA company search show you?

Running an MCA company search here returns two categories of details:

Company Profile

  • Status: whether the company is Active, Struck Off, or under another MCA-defined status

  • Company Class: Private or Public

  • Category: describes how shareholders' financial liability is structured — for example, Limited by Shares, Limited by Guarantee, or Unlimited

  • Sub category: whether it's a government or non-government company

  • Industry: the sector the company is classified under

  • NIC Code: the National Industrial Classification code representing its business activity

  • Registered Office Address: the company's official address on file with the ROC

Registration & Finance

  • Date of Incorporation: when the company was registered

  • Registrar of Companies: the ROC office the company is registered under

  • State: the state of registration

  • Authorized Capital: the maximum share capital the company is permitted to raise

  • Paid-up Capital: the actual capital shareholders have paid in so far

What is the difference between authorized capital and paid-up capital?

Authorized capital is the maximum share capital a company is permitted to issue, as declared in its Memorandum of Association. Paid-up capital is the amount shareholders have actually subscribed to and paid for. Paid-up capital is always equal to or less than authorized capital — the gap shows how much of the permitted capital the company has not yet issued.

What does the company status mean?

The status field reflects a company's current standing with the Registrar of Companies. Here is what each status means and what, if anything, to do.

Active: The company is registered and in good standing. No restriction on doing business with it based on registration status alone.

Struck Off: The company has been removed from the register by the ROC under Section 248 of the Companies Act, 2013 — typically for non-filing of returns — and stands dissolved under Section 250. It cannot legally conduct business or enter into contracts. Do not proceed with any arrangement without taking legal advice. A struck off company can apply to the NCLT for restoration under Section 252, usually within three years of the order — worth checking before writing off any dues.

Dormant: The company has applied under Section 455 of the Companies Act, 2013 to be classified as inactive due to no significant accounting transactions. It remains legally valid but not operating — confirm recent filings before relying on it as an active counterparty.

Under Process of Striking Off: The ROC has initiated the process but it is not yet complete. Treat this similarly to Struck Off for practical purposes.

Dissolved: The company no longer exists as a legal entity; winding up is complete. Do not enter into or continue any arrangement with this entity.

Note: status here reflects registration standing, not whether the company is up to date on all MCA filings. An Active company may still have pending filings on the portal.
